Neubau, Renaissance government building in Grande Île, Strasbourg, France.
Neubau is a three-story structure positioned at Place Gutenberg with classical column orders adorning each level of its facade. The building displays Tuscan, Ionic, and Corinthian capitals arranged above precisely divided pilasters.
Construction took place from 1582 to 1585 under the direction of architect Hans Schoch as a Renaissance expression. In 1781 it became the city's town hall after the earlier medieval structure was demolished.
Today the building serves as home to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Strasbourg, supporting regional business activities. Visitors can observe how it functions as a working center for the city's economic life.
The structure underwent comprehensive renovation from 2004 to 2008 while preserving its historical elements and character. Visitors should note that this is an active administrative building open to the public during designated hours.
The facade features elaborate sgraffito decorations and detailed reliefs that showcase exceptional Renaissance craftsmanship. These intricate surface ornaments were carefully restored during the recent renovation work.
