The Ancienne pharmacie du Cerf is a timber-framed building located at the corner of rue Mercière and Place de la Cathédrale in central Strasbourg. This multi-story structure displays classic Alsatian architectural features with its wooden framework and stone elements.
The building dates back to 1268 but was rebuilt multiple times following fires. The current structure was reconstructed in 1497 after the previous version was destroyed.
The name 'Cerf' refers to the deer that once marked the pharmacy's identity. This symbol connects the building to Strasbourg's long tradition of apothecaries and their craft.
The building is freely accessible and sits at a central location where the two streets meet, making it easy to find. Today it houses an information center that helps visitors explore the nearby cathedral area.
A scholar who would later become Pope Pius II stayed in this building in 1432. His presence connects this Strasbourg location to European intellectual history of the Renaissance era.
