Église Saint-Esprit

Église Saint-Esprit is a church located in the Saint-Esprit district of Bayonne with Gothic design elements. The interior features a ribbed vault in flamboyant style, while the western side displays a bell wall incorporating Romanesque features.

The site was founded in the late 12th century as a hospital priory by the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, later taken over by the Order of the Holy Spirit in 1243. This succession shaped the place and gave it its lasting character.

The stained glass windows created by the Mauméjean workshop in 1906 reflect the skill of local artisans from that period. These windows continue to shape the light and feeling inside the church today.

The building sits directly across from Bayonne train station, making it convenient for visitors arriving by rail. You can reach it easily on foot from the platform.

The church houses relics of Saint Irene that were discovered in Rome in 1825 and brought to this location in 1868. These sacred remains make it a noteworthy destination for those interested in religious history.
