It received the musée de France label in 2003 and has been run since 2007 by a joint syndicate of the city of Bayonne, the Côte Basque-Adour agglomeration and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques departmental council.
The museum displays traditional Basque clothing, farming tools, and everyday household items that show how people in this region lived across different periods. Walking through the rooms, you can understand the practical side of Basque life and the things that mattered to families here.
The museum stands at 37 quai des Corsaires, on the corner where the quay meets the old town, marked by a long EXPO banner and a green arched door. The permanent exhibition occupies three levels around a central light well, so allow time to climb between floors. Guided visits can be booked for groups.
