Château de Latsaga

Château de Latsaga is a medieval stone fortress in Ostabat-Asme situated where ancient pilgrimage routes once intersected. The structure has narrow arrow slits, fortress windows, and thick defensive walls that served its role as a stronghold guarding the region.

The castle was built in the 13th century as a stronghold for the Laxague family and saw expansion in the 14th century under those who served Navarre's ruler. This period shaped its strategic importance in the borderland between kingdoms.

The castle displays the gascon architectural style typical of this region, with its sturdy stone construction and medieval features standing out in the landscape. It represents an important example of local building traditions from centuries past that shaped how people constructed their defensive homes.

The grounds now function as an equestrian farm where horseback riding is offered throughout most of the year. Visitors should check ahead to confirm access to the property since it operates as a working farm.

Excavations in the early 2000s revealed the original layout of the fortress and uncovered a preserved north tower and guardroom spaces. These archaeological discoveries showed how the medieval fortification was originally structured and organized.
