Pont mobile de l'Alliance, Concrete drawbridge in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe
The Pont Mobile de l'Alliance is a concrete bridge that crosses the Rivière Salée strait, connecting the islands of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre. The structure has four traffic lanes and spans approximately 390 meters.
Construction began in 1994 and was completed in 1997, creating a permanent link across the channel between the two islands. This project represented a major infrastructure development for the region at that time.
The bridge stands as an engineering achievement in the French Caribbean, representing modern infrastructure development within Guadeloupe's marine environment.
The bridge is part of National Route 11 and provides direct access to the airport and shopping areas. Since thousands of vehicles use it daily, try to plan your crossing to avoid peak traffic times.
The bridge was originally designed as a lift bridge with an automated lifting mechanism that operated until 2013 for maritime passage. When shipping restrictions were put in place, the mechanism fell silent and remains a quiet feature of the structure today.
