Les Abymes

Les Abymes is a commune in Grande-Terre, Guadeloupe, with distinct zones including hills, an urban plain, and mangrove areas near Rivière-Salée. These different landscapes create varied environments throughout the territory, from developed neighborhoods to natural wetland areas.

Archaeological digs found evidence of a settlement in Belle Plaine between 1000 and 1200 AD, long before the first village was established in 1691. This shows that the area had human presence long before modern settlement took root.

About three quarters of the area is covered with mangrove forests that form natural boundaries between residential zones and coastal waters. These extensive wetlands shape how the landscape looks and influence daily life in the surrounding communities.
