Usine sucrière Darboussier, Sugar refinery in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe
The Darboussier sugar refinery is a former sugar factory in Pointe-à-Pitre with sturdy brick and metal structures surrounded by concrete construction. The complex comprises several buildings arranged to follow the workflow that once processed sugarcane into refined product.
The factory was founded in 1869 on the grounds of a former sugar plantation and operated continuously until its closure in 1980. The property received partial protection as a listed monument in 2006.
The site reflects the role of sugar production in shaping the region's economy and society for generations. The remaining buildings and layout reveal how work and daily life were organized around this industry.
The site is now part of a larger complex that is open to the public. Plan time to explore the different buildings and structures to appreciate the scale and layout of the former factory.
The site was transformed in 2015 with the opening of the Memorial ACTe, a museum dedicated to remembering slavery and trade on the factory grounds. This repurposing connects the industrial past with a space for reflection on history.
