Great organ of Nancy Cathedral, Pipe organ in Nancy Cathedral, France

The great organ of Nancy Cathedral is an impressive instrument with four keyboards and 65 stops, positioned across the entire width of the organ gallery above the central doorway. Its multiple registers allow for diverse musical expression, and the instrument is clearly visible to anyone entering the cathedral.

Nicolas Dupont created the original instrument beginning in 1756, devoting eight years to its construction and making it the largest instrument in the Duchy of Lorraine. The organ was subsequently modified and enhanced by other builders over the centuries.

The organ plays a central role in the cathedral's religious services and concerts, with musicians regularly performing it during church celebrations and public recitals. This tradition of organ music has been woven into the spiritual and artistic life of the place for generations.

The instrument is prominently positioned above the entrance doorway and is visible from throughout the cathedral when you visit. It is best observed when you enter through the central aisle or look up from the side aisles.

The instrument combines components from different periods, with significant parts coming from different master builders including modern work from the 19th century. This blend of older and newer craftsmanship gives the organ its distinctive voice and layered history.
