Dolmen de Mettray, Neolithic dolmen in Saint-Antoine-du-Rocher, France.
Dolmen de Mettray is a megalithic structure from the Neolithic period measuring about 11 meters long, with three large capstones held up by multiple standing stones. The central stone weighs between 40 and 60 tons and forms the core of this ancient monument.
The structure was built between 2500 and 2000 BC during the Neolithic period. In 1914 it received official protected status as a classified historical monument.
The name "Grotte aux Fées" comes from local folklore about three fairies who supposedly built the entire structure in one night. This tale reflects how people in the region tried to make sense of the mysterious stones.
The site is located at Moulin de Réchaussé near the boundary with Mettray and remains accessible throughout the year with no entry fees. You can visit at any time and explore the area at your own pace.
Excavations in 1910 uncovered various artifacts including polished flints and pottery fragments from the Neolithic. These discoveries give visitors insight into daily life from thousands of years ago.
