Ferme de Meslay

Ferme de Meslay is a fortified farm complex featuring a monumental gateway with a vaulted passage leading to a large barn structure. The barn's interior is divided by rows of sturdy wooden posts that support the roof and reflect medieval construction methods.

The farm was founded around 1220 as a dependency of Marmoutier Abbey to support the monastery's agricultural needs. It sustained damage during the Hundred Years War but was later restored with rebuilt wooden structures.

The farm's architectural elements, including its fortified walls and thirteenth-century design, represent the agricultural methods of medieval monastic communities.

The site is open to visitors through guided tours that provide access to the buildings and grounds. The location is easily reachable and combines well with other attractions in the Loire Valley region.

The barn was completely reconstructed in the 15th century with a new wooden framework, showcasing the craftsmanship of that era. The rebuilt structure demonstrates how medieval buildings were repaired and adapted over time.
