Réserve naturelle nationale du domaine de Beauguillot, National nature reserve in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, France.
Réserve naturelle nationale du domaine de Beauguillot is a national nature reserve on the Normandy coast featuring tidal flats, salt marshes, dunes, and ponds. Five observation points connected by walking trails offer access to orchid meadows, hedgerows, woodlands, and reclaimed polders.
The reserve was created in 1980 to protect the distinctive coastal habitats of the region. It grew larger in 2021 when officials expanded it to include additional areas along the shoreline.
Local farmers work the land using methods passed down over generations, which helps keep the natural habitats in good condition. This traditional way of farming is woven into the daily rhythm of the reserve.
Walking trails are the main way to explore the reserve, connecting the five observation points across different landscapes. Sturdy footwear is recommended since some paths cross wet areas and muddy sections.
This coastal area is home to one of France's largest harbor seal colonies, where these animals can be spotted in the shallow waters. Each winter tens of thousands of water birds stop here while traveling between breeding and wintering grounds.
