Fort Saint-Elme features a five-pointed star design with walls reaching 25 meters high and 10 meters thick, positioned at 165 meters above sea level.
Originally built as a watchtower in the 8th century during Arab-Berber occupation, the structure transformed into a fort under Charles V's orders between 1538 and 1552.
The fort maintains collections of medieval and Renaissance weapons, illustrating the evolution of military equipment through different historical periods.
The fort requires a 40-minute uphill walk from Collioure's Modern Art Museum, passing through Parc Pams to reach the entrance.
The fortress communicates with neighboring structures through an ancient system of smoke signals and fire alerts established by the Counts of Roussillon.
