The église Saint-Michel de Reichshoffen is an 18th-century church located in the center of Reichshoffen, in the Bas-Rhin department, and is listed as a classified historical monument. It is built in Vosges sandstone and features a nave with wooden pews, a plain altar, several religious artworks, and a tower rising to around 230 feet (72 meters).
Construction of Saint-Michel church began in May 1772, with the village community funding the nave and a local lord paying for the upper part including the tower. A dispute over the sharing of costs led to a court case in which the lord was found liable, and the building was listed as a historical monument in 1921.
Saint-Michel church serves as a gathering place for Sunday masses, weddings, and local celebrations that still draw residents together regularly. The carillon in its tower, known as the carillon of peace, is considered the first of its kind installed at a public site in Alsace, and its sound carries through the surrounding streets at set hours.
The church stands on Rue de l'Église in the center of Reichshoffen and is easy to reach on foot. It is generally open during services and religious celebrations, so it is worth checking in advance if you want to visit the interior outside those times.
Among the artworks inside the church, a Pietà stands out for the expressiveness of its faces, which often surprises visitors who stop to look at it closely. The building was also constructed on the footprint of an older church that previously stood on the same site.
