Maison de Nicéphore Niépce

The Maison de Nicéphore Niépce is a museum housed in a restored 18th-century building that documents the birth of photography. Inside you will find original equipment, early cameras, and detailed records showing how the first photographic images were created.

The inventor created the first permanent photograph from this house in 1826 using a process called heliography that required many hours of exposure time. This breakthrough in visual documentation came after lengthy experiments with light and chemicals conducted within the rooms of this building.

The house reveals how photography changed the way people see and document their world. You can sense how this invention, born from an ordinary home, transformed both art and how humans capture memories.

The museum is located south of Chalon-sur-Saône and is easiest to reach by car or train. Plan enough time to explore all the rooms thoroughly and see the rotating exhibitions displayed throughout the building.

You can stand in the exact room where the first photograph was taken and look through the window that served as the lens for the camera. This original window remains in its original position.
