Quai des Bateliers, Riverfront promenade in Strasbourg, France.
Quai des Bateliers is a waterfront promenade in Strasbourg that stretches approximately 530 meters (1,740 feet) along the right bank of the Ill River. It runs from Place du Corbeau to Saint-Guillaume Bridge with Rohan Palace facing across the water.
The area was first recorded as Der Nidere Staden in 1438 and took its current name in 1918. Several buildings lining the waterfront date from the 16th to 18th centuries, marking centuries of riverside settlement.
The waterfront takes its name from the boatmen who once worked here and shaped daily life along the river. The setting still reflects how closely the city was tied to water and commerce.
The waterfront is now a pedestrian zone with retractable bollards that limit vehicle traffic. A parking garage nearby offers plenty of spaces if you arrive by car.
The waterfront was converted into a car-free zone in 2019 while keeping the option to let vehicles pass when needed through its retractable bollards. This design creates a flexible approach to sharing space between pedestrians and occasional traffic.
