Abbaye d'Ubexy, Cistercian abbey in Ubexy, France
Abbaye d'Ubexy is a Cistercian monastery built on historic castle grounds spanning roughly seven hectares. The complex includes cloister buildings, a chapel, and covered corridors that form a self-contained religious community.
The monastery was founded in 1841 within a medieval castle and gained official recognition as a priory in 1847. Later, Pope Pius IX elevated it to abbey status, cementing its position as a fully independent community.
The nuns here produced communion wafers, those thin discs used in religious services. This work became a central part of life in the monastery and supplied churches throughout France and beyond.
The site is well maintained through volunteer efforts and support from local residents who care for the grounds. When visiting, expect that some areas may not be accessible and sturdy footwear is advised.
The community established daughter monasteries in Japan, the Netherlands, and South America, spreading its influence far beyond Europe. These foundations show how a small French community gained global reach.
