Commanderie de Xugney, Templar Commandery in Rugney, France.
Commanderie de Xugney is a Templar commandery in Rugney with medieval stone walls built using limestone mortar during the 12th century. The structure displays multiple construction phases visible in its masonry and mortar composition.
The commandery was established as a Templar stronghold during the Middle Ages. Following the dissolution of the Knights Templar in 1314, the Hospitallers took control and continued operations at the site.
The archaeological excavations in 2010 revealed interior nave elevations, masonry analysis, and four distinct types of mortar representing different construction periods.
The site can be accessed via Chemin de Xugney, and the church section has been protected under heritage designation since 1926. Visitors should be aware this is a protected historical site requiring respectful conduct.
Dendrochronological analysis of an oak beam revealed it was felled after 1157, providing a precise date for the commandery's initial construction. This wood analysis helped researchers pinpoint when the earliest building phase began.
