Caserne Bernadotte, Military archives center in Pau, France
Caserne Bernadotte is a barracks in Pau that stretches 175 meters along Place de Verdun and features 37 arcades distributed across four floors. The building now functions as a military archives center, storing millions of personnel documents within its distinctive arched structure.
Construction of the barracks began in 1825 and was completed around 1875, with the roof initially modified during the early period of the building's existence. The facility gradually developed into a major military archive storage center over the following decades.
The facility preserves 34 million military personnel files across 109 kilometers of shelving, documenting French military service history through generations.
The building is centrally located on Place de Verdun and easily accessible on foot. Visitors should know that as an archives center, advance arrangements may be needed to access documents or view the collections.
The barracks is named after Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, a French general who later became King of Sweden and Norway. His unusual path from military officer to European monarch gives the building an unexpected historical connection.
