Pierre d'Appel

Pierre d'Appel is a fortified prehistoric settlement in the Vosges region featuring expansive defensive walls and a deep trench running along its western perimeter. The layout reveals how the occupants organized space for protection and daily activities across the hilltop area.

The site was continuously occupied from the 5th century before Christ through the Roman period, with evidence of multiple settlement phases. Archaeological work revealed how the community adapted its defenses and structures across different eras.

The site contains evidence of various social groups, including warriors, aristocrats, craftsmen, and religious representatives who inhabited the settlement.

The site sits on a hilltop and requires a walk from the nearest parking area, with muddy conditions common after rainfall. Sturdy footwear is essential for exploring the expansive grounds comfortably.

Ceramic fragments and wine containers found at the location show that inhabitants traded across long distances, including with regions in Italy. These discoveries prove the settlement maintained connections with distant areas despite its remote location.
