Lac Mouriscot, Protected lake in Biarritz, France
Lac Mouriscot is a protected lake situated between Biarritz and Bidart, covering roughly 24 hectares of land. Steep slopes surrounding the water are covered with pine, oak, and beech trees that create a natural border around the basin.
From the 1880s onward, wealthy families built villas around the lake, shaping the surrounding landscape. During World War I, military aircraft used its waters as a landing site.
The lake and its surroundings form a protected natural space that shows how nature is preserved within reach of the city. Visitors can explore how the landscape has been maintained as a refuge for wildlife and plants over the years.
