Manoir de Mézedern, Historical manor in Plougonven, France
Manoir de Mézedern is a manor house with a quadrangular courtyard located in Plougonven, Brittany, and built over several centuries. The complex holds a main residence, a gatehouse with dovecote, two secondary buildings, and a chapel constructed between the 15th and 18th centuries.
The estate was founded in the 15th century by the Le Lagadec family and remained under their control through the 18th century. Even Le Lagadec is recorded as the first lord in 1443, establishing what would become a multi-generational noble residence.
The name comes from Breton roots referring to a medieval stronghold. Visitors can observe how the buildings cluster around the central courtyard, showing how a noble family organized its rural property.
The manor sits in a rural Breton setting and is accessed by country roads, with the surrounding landscape mostly flat. Visitors should wear weather-appropriate clothing since Breton conditions can change quickly and outdoor viewing may occur in rain.
The original gatehouse features a double portal crowned by a coat of arms from 1553, indicating the family's prominence at that time. Next to it stands a hexagonal tower with arrow slits, a rare architectural form that preserves the site's defensive heritage.
