Moulin de l'Aile, Windmill in Saint-Martin-lez-Tatinghem, northern France

The Moulin de l'Aile is a round brick windmill in Saint-Martin-lez-Tatinghem, near Saint-Omer in northern France, featuring a rotating cap and large wooden sails. The tower stands about 50 feet (15 meters) tall, and the sails span roughly 72 feet (22 meters) from tip to tip.

A chalk stone inscription inside the tower, dated 1801, names Jean-François Speneux as the buyer of the mill during the French Revolution, pointing to origins that go back even further. After passing through several owners and falling into ruin by around 1900, the mill was restored between 1979 and 1983 through a local effort, and was listed as a historic monument in 2001.

The mill stands along a road that once connected two separate villages, and it now serves as a meeting point for people curious about the rural past of the Audomarois region. Local groups occasionally organize visits where you can observe the old milling mechanisms and the craftsmanship of the workers who once operated them.

The mill is easy to spot from the roadside and can be seen from the outside during a short walk without needing to enter. Occasionally, organized visits allow access to the inside, so checking local schedules in advance is worth the effort.

On the fourth floor, there is a small door opening onto a tiny balcony, which is very rare for a windmill of this type. Even more unusual, above that door a carved stone depicts the circular gallery that wraps around the top of the structure.
