Quartier Carnot, Military barracks in Bois de Vincennes, Paris, France.
Quartier Carnot is a military complex in Bois de Vincennes that houses the second and third squadrons of the Republican Guard cavalry regiment. The facility includes training grounds and stables for around 200 horses to support these cavalry operations.
The barracks were built in 1892 as a result of a land exchange between the French state and Paris regarding the Champ-de-Mars and Bois de Vincennes territories. This territorial agreement shaped the development of the site and its current role.
The installation maintains traditional horsemanship through its working forge, where farriers craft horseshoes using techniques passed down through generations. This craftsmanship remains integral to how the cavalry operates and what visitors observe in the facility.
The grounds are located in Bois de Vincennes and are easily accessible from near the castle, with well-marked paths through the park. Visitors should know that this is an active facility and access is restricted, though guided tours may be available.
The installation altered views of the Royal Alley, which Robert de Cotte designed in 1731 in front of the castle esplanade. This historic sightline was redefined by the military presence that came later.
