The initial construction included a Romanesque tower built in the late 12th century, and the castle became a co-lordship in the 15th century under the Bonal and Latour families.

The castle was elevated to a marquisate in 1696 under Henri de Vivans and remained in the Neymet family from the Revolution until 1952.
