Pierre procureuse, Neolithic dolmen in Saint-Cyr-la-Rosière, France

Pierre procureuse is a Neolithic megalithic burial chamber in Normandy with a large capstone resting on three upright stones. The site belongs to a group of prehistoric stone monuments found throughout this region.

The burial monument was built during the Neolithic period and was officially protected as a historical site in 1930. Over thousands of years, it served as a resting place for people of this ancient era.

The monument reflects how Neolithic communities buried their dead and the role shared burial grounds played in their social lives. The way it was constructed reveals the knowledge and organizational skills of these early inhabitants of Normandy.

The site features informational panels and marked pathways that make exploration straightforward. The setting is easily accessible and offers a clear view of this prehistoric monument within its natural landscape.

One of the three supporting stones has shifted, causing the large capstone to lean at an unexpected angle. This tilting demonstrates how these ancient structures have withstood natural forces over countless millennia.

What to see in Perche: medieval castles, Romanesque churches, and museums in Normandy

The Perche region preserves an architectural heritage spanning from the Middle Ages to the classical period. Castles, churches, and abbeys in this Normandy area showcase the evolution of construction techniques and artistic styles from the 11th to the 18th century, influenced by Norman and Ligurian traditions. Medieval fortifications such as the Château de Bellême and Château de Senonches demonstrate the strategic role of this territory between the Duchy of Normandy and the kingdom of France. Religious buildings, including the Church of Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei with its Romanesque murals and the Notre-Dame of Mont Harou with its fortified tower, reflect the importance of monastic and parish life. Lords’ residences like Château de Montimer and Château de Frazé offer insights into residential architecture in Perche. The Perche Museum in Bellême and the Royal Military College Museum in Thiron-Gardais complete this exploration with collections related to regional history and military heritage.

Nice walk in the surrounding forest, but the site is quite small and not particularly remarkable! Still nice with children!
