The memorial features a network of preserved World War I trenches situated on a hill that forms the shape of a left hand with five distinct ridges.

During World War I, approximately 25,000 French soldiers and numerous German troops lost their lives in the battles that occurred at this strategic location.

Local volunteers maintain and restore the trenches, uncovering artifacts such as wine bottles, military equipment, and personal belongings that belonged to the soldiers.

Visitors can explore the trenches independently, though guided tours provide detailed explanations about the military operations and daily life of soldiers during the war.

The excavation work since 2012 has led to the discovery of remains from nine German and five French soldiers, contributing to the ongoing identification process.
