Saut de la Saule, Natural waterfall in Bort-les-Orgues, France
Saut de la Saule is a waterfall on the Rhue River that flows through a narrow gorge carved by the water over centuries. The river descends through rock formations creating pools and small cascades that shift their appearance with seasonal water levels.
In the 1800s, the Mignot brothers harnessed the waterfall's power to run a silk factory that became important to the region's economy. The industrial facility reflected how local communities adapted the natural landscape to serve their needs at that time.
The waterfall site contains deep corridors and potholes formed by water erosion through gneiss rocks, rich in quartz, mica, and feldspar minerals.
Visit in spring when water levels are highest and the cascades are most striking, as the flow varies throughout the year. Wear sturdy hiking boots since the trail can be wet and slippery, especially near the water.
The waterfall features two distinct cascades that flow separately before joining together on the descent. This dual structure makes it different from typical single-drop waterfalls found elsewhere.
