The equestrian monument in Place Saint-Martin depicts a military leader mounted on a horse, dressed in 14th-century armor with a helmet and metal protection plates. The bronze work captures intricate details of the knight's equipment and conveys the power of the horse beneath the rider.

Arthur Le Duc showed a plaster version at the 1912 Salon des artistes français as "Un compagnon de Duguesclin à Cocherel", depicting Bertrand II de Goyon, banner-bearer at Cocherel in 1364; the bronze cast by René Fulda followed in 1914. After the sculptor died in February 1918, his widow gave the statue to the Calvados department on 26 March 1920. It was set on André Guillemin-Tarayre's pedestal on Place Saint-Martin on 28 August 1921, and the name Bertrand du Guesclin was carved on the pedestal in 1925.

The knight was long taken for Constable Bertrand du Guesclin, but the rampant lion on his surcoat is the arms of the Goyon de Matignon, and the 1912 plaster was titled Un compagnon de Duguesclin à Cocherel. The name engraved on the pedestal in 1925 fixed the other identification. Caen had welcomed du Guesclin with eight days of festivities after he was made constable in 1370.

The statue stands on Place Saint-Martin, aligned with rue Saint-Manvieu and the Fossés Saint-Julien; from the square the spire of Saint-Étienne frames the rider. The pedestal's main face, with its inscription, looks northeast toward the Fossés Saint-Julien. The square is open, so the bronze can be walked around and seen from all sides.

The knight is probably not du Guesclin: the 1912 plaster was titled Un compagnon de Duguesclin à Cocherel and portrayed Bertrand II de Goyon, banner-bearer at the 1364 battle. A rampant lion of the Goyon de Matignon shows on the surcoat, yet the constable's name was carved on the pedestal in 1925.
