Monument to Napoleon and His Brothers
Monument to Napoleon and His Brothers, Bronze and granite monument in Place De Gaulle, Ajaccio, France
The Monument to Napoleon and His Brothers stands on Place De Gaulle and displays five equestrian statues of the Bonaparte family in bronze and granite. The figures show Napoleon, Joseph, Louis, Lucien, and Jerome, each crafted with detailed sculptural work.
The monument was built in 1865, inspired by designs from architect Viollet-le-Duc, who was known for his work on French monuments. In 1986, it received official classification as a historical monument, giving it protected heritage status.
The monument sits in the heart of Ajaccio, where locals and visitors pass by and see the family depicted as part of the cityscape. The Bonaparte family remains central to how the city sees itself, since this was their home.
The monument lies between the old town and newer districts of Ajaccio, making it a good landmark for getting around the city. Visitors should know that it currently undergoes renovation work and is only viewable from the outside.
Napoleon's statue is dressed in Roman style, reflecting the classical visual language of his era. Multiple sculptors including Lucien Barry, Thomas, Louis Petit, and Jerome Maillet each contributed to different parts of this work.
