Monument to Napoleon and His Brothers, Bronze and granite monument in Place De Gaulle, Ajaccio, France

The Monument to Napoleon and His Brothers stands on the south side of Place du Général de Gaulle in Ajaccio. A broad stepped granite base carries a bronze equestrian statue of Napoleon crowned with a laurel wreath, holding a globe in his right hand. Four bronze figures of his brothers Joseph, Lucien, Louis and Jérôme stand at the corners of the base, and an inscription plaque is set into its north side.

The monument was decided in August 1854 and a fundraising committee was founded in 1862, chaired in Paris by Jérôme Bonaparte. Designed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and made by Antoine-Louis Barye between 1862 and 1865, it was inaugurated on 15 May 1865 at the Place du Diamant, facing the sea. In 1969, for Napoleon's 200th birthday, it was moved to its present site facing the city; after a 1986 attack the statues were stored and later reinstalled, and on 18 December 1986 it was classified as a movable monument historique under number PA2A000017.

The monument sits in the heart of Ajaccio, where locals and visitors pass by and see the family depicted as part of the cityscape. The Bonaparte family remains central to how the city sees itself, since this was their home.

The monument stands on the south side of Place du Général de Gaulle, in Ajaccio's old town, with the city's war memorial a short distance to the east. It faces into the city rather than the sea, since it was turned around when it was moved here in 1969. The bronze figures stand on a stepped granite base on a paved surface, so they can be examined on foot from the square.

The four brothers were each carved by a different sculptor: Aimé Millet made Joseph, Gabriel-Jules Thomas made Lucien, Jean-Claude Petit made Louis and Jacques-Léonard Maillet made Jérôme. The plaster model of the whole group is kept at the Musée d'Orsay. The north face of the pedestal carries an inscription naming the four brothers and the inauguration date of 15 May 1865.
