Château des Marais

Château des Marais is a 19th-century castle in Hillion designed with Neo-Gothic features and classical French architectural principles. The building displays multiple stories, distinctive towers, and ornate decorative details throughout its structure.

Built in 1893 by Angélique de Lourmel, granddaughter of the wealthy merchant Louis-Toussaint Sébert, the castle was constructed to display family fortune and status. German forces occupied it from 1940 to 1944 during World War II, but it survived this period intact.

The château represents how merchant families of the 19th century expressed their wealth and status through grand architecture, marking a shift from nobility to business prosperity. Walking through it today, one can sense this story of social mobility written into its stones and rooms.
