Parking des Célestins, Underground parking structure in 2nd arrondissement, Lyon, France
The parking des Célestins is an underground facility with 489 parking spaces distributed across multiple levels. A central spiral ramp connects all the floors together.
The structure was completed in 1994 following a design by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. It received the European Parking Association award in 1996 for its innovative approach.
The central column contains an art installation by Daniel Buren called Sens Dessus Dessous, which you can view through a periscope from the square above. This artwork connects the underground space with the public square.
Vehicle entry is at Rue Gaspard André while pedestrians use Place des Célestins to access the facility. It operates 24 hours a day throughout the week.
The facility uses a reflective mirror system that brings natural light from the surface down to the underground levels. This thoughtful design naturally illuminates the deeper areas without extra energy costs.
