Château de Carel is a manor house situated along the Dives River with a moat system and several farm buildings arranged around it. The layout shows classical French residential design with connected outbuildings that form a working estate structure.

A manor protected by 10-metre-wide moats and the Dives stood here before the present building; it is documented from 1468 with Jehan de Hérouvel. In 1724 the Laillier family bought the estate and remodelled it in the Louis XIII and Louis XIV manner on an island formed by the moats and the river. Work is recorded in 1743 for the parquet floors and 1746 for the stair railing; the left wing was added in 1753 by François Laillier as his study. During the Second World War a German staff occupied the château, and bomb blast nearby damaged the roofs and broke the windows.

The estate's name comes from the old parish and fief of Carel, absorbed into Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives in 1835. The seigneurial line is documented from 1468 with Jehan de Hérouvel, heir of the demoiselle de Carel. A 1852 article in "Normandie Illustrée" claimed an earlier lord named Richard linked to the Tancreds of Hauteville, but no title or genealogy confirms it.

The château stands south of Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives, on the edge of the Dives in the former commune of Carel, reached by local roads; the gravel path between low hedges leads to the entrance. The building is partly protected as a monument historique and remains a private residence, so visits focus on the exterior, the courtyard and the vestiges of the 10-metre moats.

The dovecote is mentioned only as part of the classical ensemble formed with the corps de logis, its two wings, the outbuildings flanking the forecourt and a farm. The château stands on an island created by the moats and the Dives, and the 10-metre-wide moats of the earlier manor survive only as vestiges.
