Arles Roman City Walls
Arles Roman City Walls, Ancient defensive walls in Arles, France.
The stone fortification extends for 6 kilometers around the city, featuring 80 towers and multiple gates including the Augustus Gate.
Construction of the walls began in 5 BCE during Emperor Augustus's reign and continued until 20 CE under Emperor Tiberius's administration.
The walls form part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Arles, Roman and Romanesque Monuments' and demonstrate Roman military engineering excellence.
Visitors can walk along preserved sections of the eastern and southeastern walls, from the Augustus Gate to the Tour des Mourgues.
The walls incorporate recycled materials from ancient funeral monuments and triumphal arches, revealing three distinct construction periods through different stone arrangements.
