Malemort, Commune in Corrèze, France
Malemort, also known as Malemort-sur-Corrèze, is a commune in the Corrèze department of southwestern France, within the arrondissement of Brive-la-Gaillarde. It sits along the Corrèze river, with a compact old center built in local stone, surrounded by wooded hills and open countryside.
Malemort developed as a medieval lordship, with a fortified site known as the castrum de Montemart that once stood over the valley. Over time the fortress fell into disuse, and the settlement grew into the rural commune it is today.
The name Malemort means "bad death" in French, likely tied to a medieval event or local legend. On Sunday mornings, a small market brings farmers and vendors together in the town center, where residents stop to shop and chat over fresh local produce.
Malemort is easy to reach from Brive-la-Gaillarde and works well as a base for exploring the surrounding Corrèze countryside. A greenway runs along the river, making it a good option for a relaxed ride or walk away from road traffic.
The 14th-century Château de Breniges has almost entirely disappeared, leaving only two round towers standing next to the town library. Most people walk past them without realizing they are looking at what remains of a medieval castle.
