Couvent des Récollets, Ciboure

The Couvent des Récollets is a Franciscan convent located on a peninsula between two ports in Ciboure, positioned to overlook both harbors. Its central cloister features eighteen arched arcades, showcasing the craftsmanship of the original 17th-century construction.

The convent was established between 1611 and 1613 by Franciscan monks and served as a mediator in disputes over port rights between two parishes. This diplomatic role made it an important religious and administrative center for the region.

The chapel has been converted into a performance space where concerts and cultural events take place today. The west wing contains a center focused on regional architecture and heritage, offering visitors insights into local building traditions.

The convent is located at Place des Récollets and is easily accessible on foot, with plenty of space to explore the cloister and different areas of the building. Visitors should wear appropriate shoes as floors can be uneven and some rooms are connected by steps.

During renovation work in 2023, workers discovered original 17th-century wall paintings and inscriptions in the former library section. These findings offer a rare glimpse into the artistic decoration of the spaces during the convent's early years.
