Remarkable trees of La Lande-Patry, Ancient yew trees in La Lande-Patry, France.
Two ancient yew trees, one male and one female, grow side by side in the cemetery of La Lande-Patry. The female specimen has a completely hollow trunk with a large cavity inside, while the male tree maintains a solid trunk structure.
Guillaume Patry reportedly planted these yew trees in front of the church before his departure in 1270. This marked the beginning of their thousand-year presence in the village.
The yew trees appear on the town's coat of arms alongside a feudal castle, representing the deep connection between these natural monuments and local identity.
The trees are located in the village cemetery and are easy to find when visiting the town. It helps to arrive early in the day when the cemetery is quieter and light conditions are better for photographs.
During the 19th century, the female yew's hollow trunk actually housed a barber shop inside. Local men visited the barber before heading home after Sunday mass.
