Château de Grand'Maisons is a castle near Versailles featuring 18th-century architecture with preserved interior rooms and decorated facades. The building contains blue salons and ornamental details protected as registered heritage elements.
Thomas de Francini, a fountain maker for King Henry IV, acquired the estate in 1598 and started a family dynasty of royal craftsmen. His descendants served the French crown for several generations as fountain designers.
The salons of this literary house, run by the Bertin de Veaux family and their descendants, remained until November 2016 one of the rare surviving examples of the great salons of the Empire and Restoration periods. Chateaubriand, Berlioz, Gounod, Corot, Renan, Taine and Sainte-Beuve were received here in the 19th century. The family library gathered some 2,500 volumes with bindings signed Bozerian, Simier, Bauzonnet and Thouvenin.
