Diane de Poitiers' tree, Oriental plane tree in Les Clayes-sous-Bois, France.
Diane de Poitiers' tree is an oriental plane tree that spreads across the grounds of Parc de Diane in Les Clayes-sous-Bois with a broad, sheltering crown. Its massive trunk and thick foliage dominate the park visually, bearing the marks of more than 460 years of growth.
The plane tree was planted in 1556 after Diane de Poitiers received the hunting estate from King Henry II. The estate later became the location of two chateaux and witnessed the German occupation before the Liberation in World War II.
The tree carries the name of Diane de Poitiers, an influential figure at the court of King Henry II. Visitors today can walk beneath its branches in the park and sense how this place served as a backdrop for aristocratic life across the centuries.
The tree is located in the public Parc de Diane in the Yvelines department and is easily accessible on foot. The park provides plenty of space to walk around the old plane tree and remains accessible in all weather conditions.
The tree was planted in 1556 but only received official recognition as an Arbre Remarquable de France in 2000. This late designation means its historical importance went unrecognized by national heritage authorities for over 400 years.
