Hôtel de Lestang, hôtel particulier à Toulouse (Haute-Garonne)
The Hôtel de Lestang is a private mansion built in the Renaissance style in central Toulouse in the 16th century. It features a main facade facing the Place Saint-Jacques and a grand portal on the Rue Saint-Jacques adorned with rusticated stonework, a black marble plaque, and decorative leaf motifs.
The building was created in 1593 when Christophe de Lestang, a bishop, purchased several small houses on the land and consolidated them into one large mansion. In the 1800s, the city of Toulouse bought the property and converted it for administrative use, with the grand portal dating from that period of modification.
The name Lestang comes from the bishop Christophe de Lestang who commissioned the building in the 1590s. The mansion reflects the status and taste of wealthy families from that era through its decorated main gate and carefully designed stone facade facing the square.
The building is not open to the public as it serves as a private administrative building. Visitors can view the facade and portal from the outside along the Rue Saint-Jacques and Place Saint-Jacques, where the carved details and stonework are clearly visible from street level.
A black marble plaque above the portal bears an inscription that was deliberately damaged during the French Revolution. The damaged coat of arms remains visible today, telling the story of the political upheaval that affected this aristocratic family.
