Prieuré du Louroux

Prieuré du Louroux is a fortified complex in Le Louroux with defensive walls, a drawbridge, and a stone bridge surrounding buildings dating from the 12th to 20th centuries. The layout reveals how the site adapted its structures over time for different uses.

This establishment was founded in the 11th century by Marmoutier Abbey as a religious outpost. Around the middle of the 16th century it transitioned to agricultural production and eventually came under the jurisdiction of the Tours archbishopric.

The church dedicated to Saint Sulpice stands at the heart of this place with its Gothic vaulting and ongoing religious services. It continues to serve as the spiritual center for the surrounding community.

The exterior areas remain open to visitors and offer parking as well as dining options on the grounds. You can walk around at your own pace without needing any special arrangements.

Monks created a large artificial lake in the 14th century to secure fish supplies during fasting periods. This water feature remains a defining element of the landscape today.
