Château de la Grènerie, Medieval castle in Salon-la-Tour, France
Château de la Grènerie is a castle with four corner towers in Salon-la-Tour, built with rubble stone walls featuring distinctive red sandstone and white stone frames around the windows. The rectangular structure is marked by the four towers positioned at each corner, which define its appearance.
The castle was built around 1450 by the Lesbolières family from Masseret and was purchased in 1518 by the Beaupoil de Saint-Aulaire family from Brittany. This early change of ownership marked an important shift in how the property was used and managed.
The castle represents fifteenth-century French military architecture with its rectangular layout and four defensive towers positioned at each corner.
Two public pathways cross the grounds, allowing visitors to walk through parts of the estate, while the main buildings remain private and off-limits. It is important to stick to the marked routes and respect the boundaries of the private areas.
The small window openings on the northern facade date from the 1400s and stand out against the larger windows installed on the opposite side of the building. This contrast reveals how the building's purpose and needs changed over time.
