Oppidum de Mauressip, Ancient hilltop ruins in Saint-Côme-et-Maruéjols, France

The oppidum de Mauressip is an ancient hilltop settlement in the commune of Saint-Côme-et-Maruéjols, in the Gard department of Occitanie, southern France. The site consists of stone wall remains, terraces, and a tower built during the Hellenistic period, all spread across an elevated position overlooking the surrounding countryside.

The site was first occupied during the late Iron Age and continued to be used into the Roman period, pointing to several centuries of activity. In 1978, the Hellenistic tower was listed as a historical monument, followed in 1982 by the protection of the whole site.

The dry-stone walls still visible on the hill were built without mortar, using only stacked stones, a technique common across the region. Walking among them, you can get a sense of how the people who lived here organized their space on the hilltop.

The site is reached by a small local road followed by a short walk up the hill, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. Information boards on-site help visitors find their way among the ruins and understand what they are looking at.

The site contains a tower built in the Hellenistic style, a rare trace of Greek influence found far inland, well away from the coastal Greek colonies of the time. This shows how far Greek building techniques had spread into the interior of what is now southern France.
