Pierre Folle des Ormeaux

The Pierre Folle des Ormeaux is a stone burial chamber measuring 19 meters long and 6.7 meters wide, surrounded by eleven standing stones that form its walls. A massive capstone that has cracked into three pieces covers the internal space.

This megalithic structure dates back to the Neolithic period and was officially classified as a French historical monument in 1889. The recognition of its archaeological importance led to its protection as cultural heritage.

The portico features two pillars, and one of them shows elongated grooves suggesting it was once used for grinding or processing materials. These traces tell us something about how people worked with tools and resources in this space.

This site sits in open countryside away from town, so it helps to plan your route in advance before visiting. Be careful when entering the interior, as the ancient stones are fragile and some parts have deteriorated with age.

The interior maintains a consistent height of roughly 2.5 meters throughout, even though the width changes between about 4 and 5 meters. This uneven design suggests that the builders carefully adapted their stone placement to fit the surrounding landscape.
