Château de Présilly

Château de Présilly is a medieval fortress on Crotard hill in the Jura region. The structure features a rectangular keep and fortified walls dating to the 13th century, positioned at an elevation of around 640 meters.

The fortress was originally owned by the Lords of Dramelay until 1423, when Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to the Dukes of Burgundy, purchased the property. This acquisition linked the site to the political influence of the Burgundian court.

The site features characteristic medieval defenses like a barbican, rock-cut moats, and a gated entrance with drawbridge. These elements shape how the fortress appears today and show how such structures protected inhabitants from attack.

The castle sits along a walking route through the Jura region with views of the surrounding landscape. The site is best reached on foot and offers a good stopping point for those exploring the hilly area.

A rock-carved cistern within the fortress demonstrates medieval water storage techniques for long sieges. This hidden structure was vital for surviving extended periods under attack.
