Château de Lantenay

Château de Lantenay is a castle in the Burgundy region featuring two L-shaped buildings with square pavilions and a spiral staircase on the western facade. The property is dominated by a 45-meter-long wall with a central nymphaeum and water basins, topped by a large balustraded terrace.

The castle was built in the 17th century on the remains of a medieval fortress from the 12th century after Jean Bouhier acquired the estate in 1619. This reconstruction shaped the structure that still dominates the landscape around Lantenay.

The castle displays Italian influences in its design, particularly visible in the pink stone staircase and the spiral staircase from the 17th century. These architectural details reflect the tastes and connections of those who once lived here.

The grounds are accessible through a private parking area located about 16 kilometers from Dijon. A car is recommended for visiting since the castle sits away from main roads in the countryside.

The water gardens with the nymphaeum are a rare architectural feature showing how earlier generations treated water and gardens as an art form. Such elaborate water displays were particularly favored by wealthy noble families and set this place apart from other castles in the region.
