Château de Roanne, Medieval castle in Roanne, France
Château de Roanne is a castle in Roanne combining architectural elements from different periods. It features a 15th-century tower and an 18th-century main building, both constructed of stone.
The fortress was founded in the 11th century by Bérard de Roanne and originally served as a defensive structure. Over time it served as a courthouse and prison before these functions ended in 1810.
The tower contains a room with a vaulted ceiling decorated with painted coats of arms. These heraldic symbols reflect the noble connections of the families who once ruled here.
The castle houses the town's tourist office and its grounds are freely accessible to visitors. However the interior is closed to the public, so exploration is limited to the exterior areas.
The square tower stands about 20 meters high and was built with raw stone and granite blocks. These materials were added over several construction phases and reveal the long building history of the site.
