The castle stands on a circular promontory in the historical center of Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine, featuring defensive walls and towers from different construction periods.
Foulques III of Anjou established the initial wooden fortress around 990, which was later rebuilt in stone during the 1210s by Guillaume de Pressigny.
The castle houses a heritage center that displays local artifacts and objects representing the history and traditions of the Touraine region.
The entrance tower, registered as a historical monument in 1936, provides access to the castle through its square-shaped structure with remnants of defensive arrow slits.
Kings François II and Louis XIV resided in this castle, which later served as a school from 1838 to 1968 before becoming a museum.
