Château de Brantes, Historic château and remarkable garden in Sorgues, France
Château de Brantes is a manor house with carefully designed gardens near Sorgues, featuring three mirror pools arranged along a central axis. Water flows naturally through a gravity system from the nearby Sorgue River across the grounds.
A marquis built the manor house around 1700 and served as a financier for papal troops in Avignon. A general significantly expanded the property about a century later.
The gardens show the mark of a Scandinavian landscape designer who blended water features with French garden traditions. Visitors today notice the carefully arranged boxwood rows and cypress trees that frame the water and grass areas.
The gardens open from Easter to All Saints' Day, with guided tours available in German, English, and French between 10 in the morning and 6 in the evening. Book your visit ahead of time to ensure a place on a tour.
The grounds hold one of Europe's largest magnolia trees with a remarkable trunk size. Seeing this century-old specimen is a rare encounter within the oldest landscaping elements.
