Château de la Sauzaie, Historical castle in Saint-Xandre, France

The castle features facades with northern wings, surrounded by a U-shaped moat and extensive oak-planted gardens at its perimeter.

Cardinal Richelieu established his headquarters at the castle during the 1627-1628 siege of La Rochelle to coordinate military operations.

The interior preserves elements from the 18th century, including wooden panels, fireplaces, and decorative door frames throughout the residence.

The castle, located at 4 rue du Château, opens its doors to visitors during Heritage Days and offers event space rentals.

The property changed ownership in 1462 when it was exchanged for a townhouse in Bordeaux through a royal transaction.
